The Museum as a Polylogue of Dominant and Alternative Narratives: from Theory to Practice

The aim of the project was to carry out an analysis of the narratives appearing in the museums of Lithuania and Ukraine and, based on this analysis, to reveal how museum narratives are constructed, to highlight the dominant and alternative museum narratives, the problems of their interaction in Lithuania and Ukraine, on the basis of contemporary narratives to make methodological suggestions on how today's museum should contribute to the formation of an approach that responds to current value shifts. Tasks of the project: 1) to analyse museum expositions in Lithuania and Ukraine in comparative perspective, exploring museum narratives (researchers' visits, scientific research, scientific seminars). The main aspects of research: (1) interaction between dominant and alternative narratives, (2) dissemination of European values and ideological priorities, (3) cultural memory trends and memory politics. Based on research material, the aim is to provide methodological suggestions for updating museum narratives (scientific seminars, recommendations); present research results and project products to the scientific community, museum employees and museum policy makers, organize a public interdisciplinary discussion on the topic of updating museum narratives (study, recommendations, educational seminars-discussions). The work of the project is summarized by a collective monograph dedicated to the analysis of museum narratives in Lithuania and Ukraine.
