Pažaislis Baroque masterpiece has attracted the attention of art historians already for many years, and recently it is receiving more attention also from Church historian’s side, who are interested in researches of monastery foundations and economy. The publication of the most important sources of the monastery's history will allow in the future for various researchers to get even deeper knowledge and better understanding of the history of Pažaislis. In the XVIII century Pažaislis Camaldolese Monastery was visited by the monks from Polish and Lithuanian provinces - Krakow's Camaldolese Monastery. However since 1795 after the Abolition of the Republic of the Two Nations the monastery started to visit the clerks of Vilnius diocese. Until the abolition of the monastery in 1831, it was visited at least 4 times. The available visitation acts extensively describe the situation in the monastery, the architecture and decoration of the church, owned lands, received income, and the short biographies of the monks who were living in the monastery. The descriptions of these visits are very important because they are the last records revealing the position of the monastery before it was taken by Orthodox monks. The new owners made later various changes, rebuilt the interior of the church, and carried out reconstructions of the monastery's premises. In this book are published all known Pažaislis Camaldolese Monastery visitation acts, with all necessary comments, introduction of the publication, as well as with small introductory publications before each visitation act.
