Immunity and Contagion: Transformations of Biopolitics in the Time of Pandemic

The project aims to reconsider the concept of immunity in the context of biopolitics theory and examine in what ways the COVID-19 pandemic changes the forms of power and the relationship between an individual and a political or biological “other”. Research on biopolitics used to be oriented towards negative power emanating from the sovereign or modern institutions. The project seeks to reconceptualise biopolitics not as a negative power but as a network connecting different actors. The project seeks to extend the concept of immunity and interpret it as a space of potential encounter with “otherness”. Taking into account the recent research on immunity, it can be argued that immunity is not just a defensive mechanism but also a complex ecosystem. The project analyses biological, political and ecological immunity and reveal the interrelations between an individual, a political community, and interspecies ecosystems.
