The book ‘Born in Spain, Beloved in Antakalnis. Images of Jesus of Nazareth in Lithuania’ by Regimanta Stankevičienė further continues the publication and research of the images of Jesus Christ that used to be called “Jesus of Nazareth” or (after their prototype from Vilnius Antakalnis Trinitarian church) “Jesus of Antakalnis” that were borrowed from churches, museums, libraries and private collections and displayed in an exhibition of the same title that took place at the Church Heritage Museum in 2019. This is the first study in Lithuania (and beyond) that uses scientific text and illustrations to provide such a broad and consistent analysis of the overall panorama, artistic expression, and development of this image characterised by a unique history and iconography, and identifies interactions between professional art and folk art. The artworks included in the book are of various types and purposes: sculptures and paintings intended for church altars, processional altars, processional banners, crosses and other monuments, as well as engravings, medals and even theatre set designs. The author presents a lot of new historic and contextual materials and updates previously assigned authorships and other data. The book is intended for the professionals of Art History, Cultural History, Religion History and Ethnic History as well as for anyone interested in these fields or wishing to follow folk art traditions.
